Geography

Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) is the highest peak in Britain (3559 ft), south of the Scottish Highlands. The name Snowdon was allegedly bestowed on the mountain by sailors in the Dark Age, who when journeying from Ireland to Wales, saw snow topped mountains on the skyline, and named them Snowy Hills or ‘Snaudune’. This name eventually came to represent the single peak that we know today as Snowdon.

The Snowdonia mountains are composed of a number of ranges – the 3 most popular being Snowdon itself, the Carneddau and the Glyders. Snowdon is found beyond the Llanberis pass, about 12 miles away from Pont Cyfyng, and there are many walks and scrambles up to the top, or if you prefer, a train ride! The Carneddau lie to the North of Pont Cyfyng and consist of great ridges and grassy green expanses of hills, whilst Glyder Fawr and Glyder Fach to the West are formed from shattered volcanic rocks – spectacular formations are to be found over the summits.

Moel Siabod itself lies behind the Longhouse. Moel translates to ‘Bare mound’, and the 2861 feet mountain is situated in the central zone of Snowdonia between the Llugwy and Ledr valleys. Also in this zone are located the Moelwyns and Cnicht, and the remote twin Arenig peaks.

There are a great number of walks in the area, ranging from easy low-level ‘picnic’ walks to long day trips with decidedly difficult and technical aspects to them. There are beautiful valleys and stunning lakes, wild and rugged landscapes contrasting with undulating green fields of Welsh Mountain Sheep and local Black Cattle.

Pont Cyfyng is a mere 20 miles from enviable coastal scenery – the university town of Bangor, the impressive mass of Conwy Castle and the seaside town of Llandudno are all within a scenic half hour drive. Isolated and unspoilt sandy beaches can be found along the Lleyn Peninsula and on Anglesey, and there are a feast of historic buildings such as the beautiful Penrhyn stately home and gardens, Conwy castle and the historic church of Bangor within a 30 minute drive. The stunning Bodnant gardens are only 20 miles away, and there are many other things to see and do in the surrounding area.
